Description
[PYRENEES] - RAMOND DE CARBONNIÈRES (Louis François Élisabeth). Observations made in the Pyrenees to serve as a sequel to observations on the Alps.
A la découverte des Pyrénées, this work is considered to be "the birth certificate of the Pyrenees" by Céline Minard. An embossed copy of the short-lived "Société de 1789" founded in April 1789 by the moderate constitutionalists Condorcet, Mirabeau, La Fayette, Roederer, Dupont de Nemours and Talleyrand.
Paris, Belin, 1789.
2 parts in one volume in-8 (205 x 136 mm), brown calf, cold fillet framing the boards, gilt iron of the Society of 1789 in the centre of the boards and at the bottom of the spine, smooth spine decorated with red morocco and cloisonné decoration with Greek vases, gilt roulette on the edges.
Continuous pagination: VIII-284-(4) p., then paginated from p. 285 to p. 452, 3 plates.
Binding with important restorations. Some scattered foxing. Stamps of the "Société de 1789".
First edition illustrated with a map of the Pyrenees drawn by Ramond and engraved by Tardieu, a map of the regions of Barèges and Bagnères and a plate "Vue des Pyrénées" after Vidal and Reboul engraved by Tardieu.
In 1787, L. Ramond de Carbonnières was one of the first explorers of the central and upper part of the Pyrenees, which he covered on foot in order to respond to the controversy over the geological nature of the massif. In the course of this exploration, he described the history of the regions he crossed and the customs of their inhabitants.
A pleasant copy of this emblematic work.
