Description
ULLOA (Bernardo, de). Recovery of manufacturing and trade in Spain. Founding work of the Spanish school of economics, very well established in a binding with the arms of Antoine-Louis Rouillé, comte de Jouy (1689 - 1761). Paris: Frères Estienne, 1753. One volume in-12 (170 x 107 mm). Bound in red morocco with arms stamped in gold in the centre of the boards, triple fillet. Spine ribbed, decorated with an elegant décor of small gold-stamped irons, all edges gilt. 3ff.n.ch., 139 pp (1p); 235 pp,(1p). First French edition, translated by Plumard de Dangeul. Published in 1735 under the title "Restablecimiento de las fábricas y comercio de España", this work is considered one of the founding texts of modern Spanish economic thought, marking a transition towards a more structured and statist economy. The essay is divided into two parts: the first deals mainly with Spanish manufactures and the second with maritime trade. Ulloa argues for far-reaching economic reform in Spain. Inspired by Colbert's French economic model, he proposed the revitalisation of national industry (the "fábricas"), a protectionist policy aimed at reducing imports, the promotion of exports, tax reform and an active role for the State. Antoine-Louis Rouillé was Secretary of State for the Navy (from 1749 to 1754), then Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (from 1754 to 1756). Coat of arms with a chevron between two flowers in chief and a crescent in base. A very fine copy from a prestigious provenance.
