Highly luxurious edition illustrated by Jeannisson, nominative copy of the famous bibliophile and jeweller Henri Vever. Paris, Société des Amis du Livre Moderne, 1939-1944. One volume in-4 (30.5 cm x 24.5 cm). Bound in full wine-leather morocco, with "talking" architectural decoration cold-stamped on both covers depicting the stylised façade of the Hôtel du Nord. Above the gold-painted title sign, a window opens onto pleated curtains and a railing decorated with two intertwined hearts. Grey morocco lining, edges gilt on witnesses. Half morocco cover and slipcase. Binding signed Semet & Plumelle. 191 pp. Deluxe edition illustrated with 41 strikingly realistic original copper engravings by Robert Jeannisson, capturing the soul of the Canal Saint-Martin. The beautiful, highly realistic illustrations are by the artist Robert Jeannisson (1905-1998): 41 original copper engravings, including one on the cover, and 5 full-page engravings. Limited edition of 120 copies on large paper. A nominative copy (no. 75) printed for Henri VEVER, a famous jeweller and one of the greatest bibliophiles of the 20th century. A fresco of working-class Paris, this novel, inspired by Dabit's youth, portrays with humanity the daily life of a hotel on the Canal Saint-Martin. The Semet & Plumelle workshop (1925-1955) embodies the perfection of classic French bookbinding. Their impeccable workmanship is combined with sober, evocative decoration. A copy in perfect condition.
