Slight rubbing from use, head cap rebacked. Some rare brown spots. First edition and first printing on vellum. The title, decorated with an engraved vignette depicting six figures standing and dressed in costumes typical of a state or profession (coachman, bourgeois, etc.), is complete. The 6 plates are lithographed and finely hand watercoloured at the time: Le Faubourg Saint-Germain, Quartier de la Bourse, Quartier Saint-Denis, Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Le Marais, Chaussée d'Antin. Henry Monnier (1799-1877), a major caricaturist and illustrator of the first half of the 19th century, was a champion of republican values and social satire. Admired by Balzac in particular, he took part in the illustration of La Comédie humaine. A pupil of Anne-Louis Girodet and Antoine-Jean Gros. He published his first portraits of actors in 1821, and in 1822 made his first trip to London, where colour lithography techniques were developing rapidly. After several stays in England, he returned to Paris where, between 1826 and 1830, he produced a series of albums in which he depicted the city's customs and types with unprecedented profusion. Six quartiers de Paris is one of the rarest. A fine, fresh and clean copy.
