An admirable copy of the original, printed on Chine and enriched with a portrait of the author engraved on Japon by Jean Véber, in a splendid binding signed by Georges Canape, decorated with a large finely chiselled leather, showing a nude woman in a medallion in front of a view of Venice. Paris, Société du Mercure de France, 1897. In-8, ebony morocco, spine ribbed, first cover decorated with a large chased leather, in several colours, showing a view of Venice with a nude woman in a medallion, double gilt fillet on the edges, large gilt inner lace with the bookbinder's signature "Canape R.D.", carmine moire lining and endpapers, marbled paper double endpapers, gilt head on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, bordered slipcase (Canape). 484 pages and 2 ff.n.ch., 1pl. Minor wear to slipcase. First edition of this novel by Hugues Rebell (1867-1905), recounting the sulphurous adventures in the life of Nichina, a beautiful Venetian courtesan. Limited edition of 89 numbered copies, this one of 15 on China paper (N°21). Enriched with a portrait on Japon of Hugues Rebell signed by Jean Véber. A fine provenance, that of the library of Georges Canape, with his bookplate on the first white endpaper. Superb binding by Georges Canape R.D (Relieur-Doreur) decorated with a large chiselled leather, rare as it was rarely executed in Georges Canape's workshops. Copy in perfect condition.
