Description
MAC-NAB (Maurice). Poèmes Mobiles. Monologues de Mac-Nab ?with illustrations by the author and a preface by Coquelin cadet. [Following:] Poèmes incongrus. A collection of extremely rare offprints on Japanese paper of the last collections by the famous chansonnier of the Chat Noir, Maurice Mac-Nab (1856-1889). Copy enriched with the original drawing for the frontispiece. Paris, ?Léon Vanier, 1889; Paris, Compagnie générale d'impression, an IX de M. Grévy ( ca 1889). 2 volumes in one in-12 (195 x 130 mm), Bradel-style half-percaline boards with corners, smooth spine decorated with a brown leather patch, gilt lettering, fleurons, fillets and date at foot. Untrimmed. Covers preserved. (Binding signed Carayon). xii-142pp ; 31 pp. Rubbing from use, cover pierced at head and foot. First editions, rare copies of a special edition, limited to only 13 copies on Japon paper (n°11 & 2, initialled). An exceptional copy to which has been added the original Indian ink drawing for the frontispiece "Les poeles mobiles". The collection is divided into three parts: "Poèmes mobiles" in verse, "Monologues en prose", and songs. The whole is a collection of biting, poetic and often subversive texts, combining black humour, social criticism and fantasy. Its natural sequel, "poèmes incongrus", opens with a curious preface by Voltaire, who is in fact "the spirit of Voltaire". The author has had fun "resurrecting" him in order to write in his name, or rather through his ghost. Provenance: from the library of André Barrier ( Paris 1870 - 1957 ) with his bookplate engraved on wood by Eugène Dété and his red stamp. President of the Court of Appeal and a great bibliophile, André Barrier was president of the Cent Bibliophiles and a member of several other bibliophilic societies. A pleasant copy of prestigious provenance.
