Description
DUCHATEL (Edouard). Traité de Lithographie Artistique. Rare and interesting treatise on the technical and aesthetic evolution of fine art printing during the Belle Époque. Paris, by the author, Société des Imprimeries Lemercier & l'Artiste, s.d. (1893). In-folio (330 x 255 mm). Bradel style paperback, light blue half cloth with corners, smooth spine decorated with a gilt coin and irons. Illustrated covers preserved. 52pp. 25 hors-texte plates. Percaline a little rubbed. First edition. Limited edition of only 200 copies. The first treatise on artistic lithography to be published since Engelmann's (1835). Édouard Duchatel, chief "tester" at Lemercier - the most prestigious lithographic printing house in Paris - reveals the technical secrets that led to the renaissance of original prints at the end of the century. The beautiful iconography is made up of 25 plates printed on different papers (Chine, vellum, laid paper, etc.) after compositions by Fantin-Latour, Buhot, Bertrand, P. Dillon, Vogel and others. The set includes six plates of a colour lithograph. Provenance: from the library of André Barrier (Paris 1870 - 1957) with his bookplate affixed to the first flyleaf. President of the Court of Appeal and a great bibliophile, he was president of the Cent Bibliophiles and a member of several other bibliophilic societies. A pleasant copy with the beautiful covers preserved.
