Description
[CABET (Etienne)]. Voyage et aventures de Lord Villiam Carisdall en Icarie, translated from the English of Francis Adams by Th. Dufruit, maître de langues. An important 19th century utopian novel, written by one of the first French communists. Founding work of Icarian communism. Paris, Hippolyte Souverain, 1840. Two In-8 volumes (210 x 135 mm), grained havana calf, smooth spine decorated with two pieces of red morocco and gilt decoration. Engraved portrait, 378pp [i.e.402], (2ff)+510pp. Leather rubbed, spine faded, headpieces faded, splits at first spine of volume 1 ( max 5 cm), corners dulled. Interior in generally good condition, fresh paper shows slight signs of handling. Volume 1 lacks the false title and title, stains on the first leaf. Engraved portrait added, flyleaf. In volume 2 small angular restorations to the title and false-title. Extremely rare first edition, published under pseudonym, very probably printed in small numbers, with mention on the false title "also sold by the author". Inspired by Thomas More's Utopia and the ideals of Rousseau, Étienne Cabet wrote this novel during his exile in London (1834-1839), after being sentenced for his opposition to the July Monarchy. In it, he describes an "ideal city" through the imaginary story of a young English aristocrat who discovers a republic in Icaria, established after a "good Icar" overthrew a dictator. The new regime is based on egalitarian principles, where money, private property, courts of justice, secret police and delinquency do not exist. Workshops and agriculture were mechanised and based on the latest scientific applications. Food and clothing are provided free to citizens, with everyone "receiving according to their needs". Education is universal and free for both sexes, and there is a community library with carefully selected books. There was no state religion, but the Icarians were Christians, and Cabet considered the first Christians to be the first ideal society. Very rare work, sold as is.
