CHAUVET (Jacques). La Pratique universelle de géométrie. Containing an explanation of his Cosmometer and all geometric instruments. An exceptional collection of three 16th-century geometry treatises in original editions. Published in Paris by Henry Thierry in 1585. Three volumes in one in-4 format (195 x 140 mm). Bound in reused parchment, smooth spine, marbled edges. 4 ff.n.ch., 46 ff. ; 26 ff. ; 2 ff.n.ch., 29 ff. ; 78 woodcut vignettes in-text. Binding slightly rubbed, a few stains on the spine, wetness in the margins of the first forty leaves and at the corner of the last 7 leaves, wormholes in the margins of leaves 6-9 , without affecting the text, top margin trimmed on the first 76 leaves (only some page headers are affected). Short cropping with loss of text. Last leaf missing from last treatise. First edition of this treatise on geometry. In addition to the geometrical content and numerous engraved vignettes, it contains a dedication epigram in French verse with anagram signed by Jean Dorat, an important member of the Pléiade. Jacques Chauvet, professor of mathematics at the University, is also the author of treatises on arithmetic and surveying, as well as an edition of Euclid's Elements that remains in manuscript, mentioned by Léopold Deslile (Inventaire des manuscrits français de la Bibliothèque Nationale T.2, p. 238). Woodcut bookplate by Jarosson on white endpapers; handwritten inscriptions in margins. Subsequently bound: - La Pratique universelle de l'arpenterie, contenant l'explication de parfaitement Mesurer, Arpenter, Toiser, Aulner & prendre le plant de la superficie de tous corps & figures de telles formes qu'ils soient, Paris, chez Henry Thierry, en 1585. - Instruction et usage du cosmomètre, ou Instrument universel pour les dimensions, tant Géométriques que Optiques, Astronomiques & Géographiques, Paris, au mont S. Hilaire in 1585. An interesting and abundantly illustrated work.
