A major source for the study of the iconography of Marie-Antoinette. Copy of the bibliophile and print collector André Barrier, enriched with 6 original pieces including 3 physiognotraces of the royal family. Paris, Quantin, 1883. Volume in-4 (320 x 230 mm), Bradel style in green half-percaline with corners, smooth spine decorated with a coin, title, finial and date in gilt. margins untrimmed. Covers preserved. Margins untrimmed. XVI-247 pp, 42 plates, index of artists. Covers a little faded, slight wetness in foot margin of last 5 leaves. On the original parts some traces of handling, small marginal wetness and some foxing, not serious. First edition, printed on vellum, and enriched with a beautiful iconography of 42 plates reproducing old engravings. This reference work surveys and analyses representations of the Queen, from official portraits to satirical images, including works by renowned painters such as Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun and Jean-François Janinet. A choice copy, prepared by André Barrier, who has included five original pieces mounted at the beginning of the volume. These include unsigned physiognotraces of the royal family, as well as a very rare portrait engraved in sanguine by R. Brookshaw (1774), not included in the catalogue. The work also contains several handwritten annotations in the margins. André Barrier (Paris, 1870-1957), a great bibliophile and collector of prints, was president of the Paris Court of Appeal and president of the Cent Bibliophiles. His fine etched bookplate appears on the first flyleaf.
