First edition of this novel by the Brazilian novelist Regina de Oliveira, daughter of the ambassador Régis de Oliveira. The illustrations are woodcuts by André Domin (1883-1962), a major figure in Art Deco.
A very rare "confidential" edition, limited to 30 copies, this being one of the top 10 on Arches laid paper (n°D) signed by the author & printed specially for Count Alexandre Keller, including a suite of the four hors-texte.
A precious copy enriched with :
-An original photograph of the author with a signed handwritten letter to Count Keller.
-A signed autograph letter (L.A.S.) from Regina Regis to the Count in which she explains why she is still in Paris, after having come "very close to death".
-The heraldic bookplate engraved by Stern of Chamberlain Count Alexander Eduardovich Keller (1859-1938), who was exiled to Paris after the 1917 Revolution.
-A handwritten bookplate by Émile Jammes.
The novel was inspired by the author's life in Parisian high society, and bears this singular dedication: "To those women who, not having the courage to be emancipated, suffer from the evil that pursues them, an unremitting evil, as quiet as a shadow, an evil that will even out their destinies, gently suffocate their personality, even their intelligence, under a placid appearance that the world sees and calls Happiness!
