Description
LOBEL-RICHE (Almery) - [BAUDELAIRE (Charles)]. Suite for "Le spleen de Paris" with Drawings & Correspondences. Lobel-Riche's superb etchings, accompanied by an original signed drawing and previously unpublished correspondence addressed to his close friend René Jeanne - critic and film historian - offer a unique insight into his life and work. Paris, Le Livre du bibliophile, G. & R. Briffaut, 1921. In-4 ( 330 x 275 mm). Beautiful Japanese binding in full leather blind-stamped with a rich stamped decoration, painted and enhanced with gold of oriental scenes, flowers, birds and butterflies in multi-lobed medallions on a floral background. Collation: 7 documents (letters, maps, drawings mounted on tabs), 2 ff.n.ch. (publisher's prospectus), drawing, 31 plates. Used rubbing to the spines and headpieces, headpieces worn, corners slightly uncovered, two of them dulled. This work includes a suite on Japon impérial, printed separately from the 30 etchings by Lobel-Riche for Baudelaire's Le Spleen de Paris, published by Le Livre du Bibliophile & Briffaut. According to the explanatory leaflet, there are 44 copies on Japon, thirty of which are on Japon impérial. This exceptional copy is enriched with : - an additional plate on Japon, with remarks and a signed letter from the artist, -an original signed Indian ink drawing of an elegant woman of the 1920s walking her two greyhounds (250 x 240 mm), -five letters and two cards written from Paris, Fez and Algiers, two of which were written during the war, when Lobel-Riche was a soldier posted to Morocco with Marshal Lyautey, and one from Algiers, dated February 1920, in which he expresses his wonder at the city: "What an Eden, my dear friends! -an ink and wash sketch, signed and dated "Algiers, 18 February 1920" (145 x 90 mm). A unique copy, a veritable "book-object" in which the virtuosity of Lobel-Riche is combined with an intimate provenance and a binding of exotic beauty.
