"New edition, augmented by several stories" of this collection of marvellous tales inherited from the tradition inaugurated by Pierre Boaistuau in the mid-16? The 1594 edition (the first was published in 1560) contains more and more stories of monsters, natural wonders, apparitions, catastrophes and extraordinary events, presented as signs sent by God to warn against sin and call for repentance. At the crossroads of chronicle, moral treatise and sensational narrative, the work is an illustrated reflection of the fears and beliefs of the late Renaissance.
This edition is illustrated with 92 woodcuts, most of them depicting fantastic creatures, including cerberi, tiara-wearing devils, sylphs, Siamese twins, child-eating dogs and other natural wonders.
