The last novel by one of the most popular English novelists of the eighteenth century, translated into French and published during her lifetime. Amsterdam, 1763. 2 vol. in-12 (171 × 106 mm). Full red morocco, triple fillet framing the boards, spines decorated with two mosaic morocco pieces and rich gilt decoration, inner lace, all edges gilt. Contemporary binding. 3 f.n.ch., 320 pp. ; 1 f.n.ch., 372 pp. In vol. I, pages 5-6 and 19-20 are handwritten, completing the text of ff. A3 and A11 omitted by the binder. Minor defects to binding. Inside fresh and clean. First edition of the anonymous French translation of the last novel by Sarah Fielding (1710-1768), at the time the most popular English novelist after Eliza Haywood. The History of Ophelia (1761) is the last of her seven novels. It is an epistolary fiction, often comic, told by the heroine to an anonymous correspondent in the form of a long continuous letter. The translation is attributed to Octavie Guichard Durey de Meinières. A very fine copy in a luxury full red morocco binding.
