Description
CÉLINE (DESTOUCHES Louis Ferdinand dit). Quinine in therapeutics. Famous and the first real publication by Louis-Ferdinand Céline, who had just graduated in medicine. Paris, O. Doin, [1924]. In-8 (155x115mm), paperback. 138pp [3ff. including publisher's catalogue]. Spine (muted) slightly soiled, otherwise very good condition. First edition, for which no large papers were printed. Published by Céline under his real name, Louis Destouches, and on a self-publishing basis, this work closely follows "La Vie et l'OEuvre de Philippe Ignace Semmelweis", a medical thesis defended by the writer in May 1924. With a print run of 5,800 copies and a second edition the following year, it appears to have been commissioned by the League of Nations, for which he was working at the time. Written in a purely scientific style and, all in all, rather impersonal, one would struggle to find in it the literary genius in germ that would give rise to "Voyage" in 1932. Enclosed: a rare propaganda leaflet from the "Bureau pour l'encouragement à l'emploi de la quinine".
