Description
GAUTIER (Théophile) and FRAIPONT (Gustave). Enamels and Cameos. One hundred and twelve drawings by Gustave Fraipont. Preface by Maxime du Camp. A remarkable copy on China paper, enriched with an original signed watercolour by Gustave Fraipont, perfectly established by Marius Michel in a sumptuous mosaic morocco binding with lining. Paris, Librairie L. Conquet, 1887. Small in-8, slate-coloured morocco, spine ribbed and underlined with gilt stippling, double framed with gilt corner fleurons, gilt lettering, interlacing gilt and mosaic flowers in red morocco in the centre of the boards, framed with fillets and stippling with gilt corner fleurons, guilloché headpieces, double gold fillet on the edges, interior frieze, red ochre morocco lining framed by a double gold fillet with gilt corner fleurons and mosaics in black, brocaded silk endpapers with multicoloured floral motifs, double endpapers, gilt edges, covers preserved (Marius Michel). XVI and 250 pp. 2 f. (completed printing, subscribers' bonus), 7 pp. (secret museum), 112 drawings in black by Gustave Fraipont, including 1 frontispiece and numerous headpieces, in-text and end-papers. Spine a little faded, tiny rubbing at head. A very fine edition of Théophile Gautier's masterpiece, with a preface by Maxime Du Camp and 112 evocative compositions by Gustave Fraipont. Limited edition of 700 copies, this one of the first 200 on Chine paper, initialled by the publisher (N°195). A precious copy with an original signed watercolour in colour by Gustave Fraipont, mounted after the title. Ex-libris with the monogram "B.S" on the first white endpaper. Attractive binding signed by Henri Michel (1846-1925), known as Marius Michel fils, winner of the Grand Prix for bookbinding at the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
