Announced as early as 1836 in the catalogue of the publisher Renduel, it was not until almost thirty years later that Charpentier published this adventure novel, Gautier's last and undoubtedly most famous. Originally published as a serial in the "Revue nationale et étrangère", it features a young, penniless nobleman who joins a theatre troupe. Under the stage name "Capitaine Fracasse", Baron de Sigognac begins the comic mourning of the illusions of his caste and finds a new aristocracy of the spirit among the comedians. And then, of course, he meets Isabelle... but you have to read the story.
A charming example.
