Originally published in 1896, Aphrodite was so successful that it launched the Mercure de France publishing house. This success was due in part to a laudatory article by François Coppée, and no doubt to the libertine scenes that punctuate the novel. Prior to this, Pierre Louÿs had published only booklets, usually bound, in limited editions.
Édouard François Zier (1856-1924) was a French painter and illustrator, a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme, renowned for his historical, medieval and mythological scenes. A regular contributor to the "Journal des Voyages", "L'Illustration" and the "Figaro illustré", he produced numerous illustrations for children, including "Les Misérables" and the works of the Comtesse de Ségur. He was one of the leading figures in French illustration during the Belle Époque.
