Two letters from Pierre Mac Orlan on the title page: the first, dated 1941, "to Monsieur Émile Paul (Robert et Albert)", and the second, dated February 1958, to "Monsieur Marc Fenard".
The last of Mac Orlan's great maritime novels, L'Ancre de Miséricorde is set, like its two predecessors (À bord de l'Étoile Matutine and Les Clients du Bon Chien jaune), in the Brest of the late eighteenth century, with its arsenal, trading port and convicts, which so enchanted the minds of young boys like Yves-Marie Morgat.
