Description
DESLIGNÈRES (André) & ROUPNEL (Gaston). Nono. Fine edition published by Mornay illustrated with original woodcuts by André Deslignères. Fine copy on japon impérial. Paris, Mornay, 1928. In-4 (255x200mm), paperback, covers preserved, hardback marbled folder, spine ribbed with gilt title, slipcase lined. 303pp. Copy number 1 on antique Japon à la forme, numbered and containing half of the originals and the various states of the engravings. Originally published in 1910, "Nono" was shortlisted for the Prix Goncourt that same year. It describes the life of the Burgundian winegrowers; Gaston Roupnel was a historian of rural life. André Deslignères (1880-1968) began his career as a draughtsman in a passementerie factory in the north of France, before trying his hand at copper engraving, which he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1905. In 1921 he founded the first and only Salon de l'OEuvre anonyme; in his studio on Boulevard de Clichy, Deslignières frequented the artists of Montmartre and practised painting. His studio was a meeting place for Utrillo, Carco, Mac Orlan, Dorgelès and the rest of the merry Montmartre gang who used to meet up in the evenings at Father Frédé's house, Le Lapin Agile. The drawings, done in pencil and bistre wash, are all signed by the artist and printed on laminated sheets in a separate paperback.
