An exceptional copy from the collection of Henri Couderc de Saint-Chamant, one of the 130 first copies on Japon (N°25), including 3 states of the etchings and enriched with an original watercolour in colours signed by Georges Rochegrosse, in a splendid binding by Ruban with mosaic lining in the Art Nouveau style.

In-4 (200x290 mm), blond morocco, spine with 4 threaded and cold-framed raised bands, triple gilt filleting on covers and entrenerfs, double gilt filleting on edges, mauve morocco lining decorated with a gilt floral composition, stamped and mosaicked in havana, pink, green and ecru morocco, signature "P. Ruban 1906" in the leather, beige and mauve decorated silk endpapers, double guard, gilt edges on witnesses, covers and spine preserved, in bordered slipcase (P. Ruban, 1906).
VI and 42 pages and 5 ff.n.ch. (specimen and illustrated subscription prospectus), 24 compositions by Georges Rochegrosse etched by E. Decisy, including 1 frontispiece and 20 hors texte. Text framed with various ochre-coloured ornaments.
Leather very slightly shaded in places, slight rubbing.
First illustrated edition of this symbolist collection by the master Théodore de Banville, composed of twenty-one sonnets paying tribute to illustrious princesses. First edition of 24 "prestigious compositions of unforgettable opulence" (specimen) by Georges Rochegrosse, the poet's illustrious adopted son and old friend, depicting Pasiphaé, Ariane, Médée, Hélène, Cléopâtre, Marguerite d'Écosse, Marie Stuart, Lucrèce Borhia, and others.
Limited edition of 400 numbered copies, this one of the first 130 on Japon (N°25 on Japon), containing 3 states of the etchings, including 2 states with remarks: the pure etching and the final state before the letter.
Enriched with an original watercolour in colour signed G. Rochegrosse on the flyleaf, corresponding to the illustration on page 40, as well as the specimen and the subscription prospectus, illustrated with two additional etchings (5 ff. bound in-fine).
From the collection of the patron-bibliophile Henri Couderc de Saint-Chamant (1861-1910), with his ex-libris vignette engraved in colour by Adolphe Giraldon on the flyleaf.
Splendid lined morocco binding by Pétrus Ruban (1851-1929), one of the great bookbinders of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
