An exceptional copy with a signed autograph letter to John Grand Carteret, in a sumptuous mosaic binding by Charles Meunier in homage to the Paris of the Belle Époque. Paris, Printed for Henri Beraldi, 1893. In-4 (195x270 mm), lavaliere morocco, with a large colour mosaic composition on the front cover celebrating Paris, its festive customs and its love of good food, showing maple leaves, bunches of grapes, a bowl of fruit, a lute, a casserole dish, fireflies, cat heads, as well as a hare and a partridge hanging from a lamppost, ribbed spine framed with cold fillets extending over the covers, mosaic bats on the entrenerfs and on the second cover, gilt fillet on the edges, wide inner border in the same morocco set with gilt swallows and signed "Ch. Meunier, 96", brocaded silk lining and endpapers decorated with ribbons and sheaves of green and beige wheat, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, covers and spine, lined slipcase (Ch. Meunier, 96). IX and 325 pages, 51 off-text colour drawings by Pierre Vidal, including 1 frontispiece. Nerfs slightly faded, minor rubbing on a spine, in the corners and on the second cover. First edition illustrated with 51 colour drawings by the painter, engraver and illustrator Pierre Vidal (1849-1916). A delightful wander through the cafés, brasseries, balls, tables d'hôtes, cabarets and restaurants, from the Bouillon Duval to the Maison Dorée, via the Eiffel Tower, the Chat Noir and the Moulin Rouge, to discover the gastronomic and festive customs of the capital during the Belle Époque. It was written by Emile Goudeau (1849-1906), founder of the famous Cercle des Hydropathes and a great connoisseur of Parisian bohemia at the time. Unique edition of 138 numbered copies on Vélin des Vosges paper, this one N°114. A precious copy enriched on the justification with an autograph signed letter from the publisher Béraldi to John Grand Carteret (1850-1927), journalist, great collector and pioneer in the field of iconology. Splendid emblematic binding signed by Charles Meunier, the master of his art.
