This work is a hagiography dedicated to Saint Lidwine, a young Dutchwoman of the fifteenth century who became crippled after a fall on the ice. Huysmans recounts her life of extreme suffering, which she accepted as a path to redemption and mystical union with God. Through this portrait, Huysmans highlights Catholic spirituality, redemptive pain and asceticism, the central themes of his religious period. In a way, it illustrates his spiritual conversion and contrasts with his initial naturalism, proposing a style of writing imbued with faith, symbolism and contemplation.
