Dedicated to King Charles IX, this vast panegyric earned François de Belleforest (1530-1583) his appointment as historiographer of France when he was living in Paris alongside the authors of the Pléiade after a stay at the court of Marguerite de Navarre. The Comminge scholar and translator, "more prolific than talented" (Barbe 79), drew up an eulogistic portrait of the kings of France bearing the name Charles, compiling anecdotes and historical events in nineteen books. In addition to his work as a historiographer, Belleforest is known for his "Histoires tragiques", which have been reprinted many times and probably inspired Shakespeare's Hamlet.
[Brunet I 754; Barbe 79].
A very fine copy of this carefully produced edition with grotesque lettering and banderols from the presses of Jean le Blanc.
