"One does not dream as he has lived", said La Bruyère of the Duc de Lauzun. Pigault-Lebrun was, in his time, one of these characters, now forgotten. We will enjoy reading his incredible biography (shipwrecks, letters of cachet, flight to England, enlistment in the customs service, elite gendarme in the King's household, clumsy actor, stage manager at the Théâtre-Français, etc.).
"Le Citateur" is a thorough and systematic dismantling of Christianity through a dissection of sacred texts, a parodic analysis of clerical behaviour and an abundance of evangelical inconsistencies. The comical nature of his style and the spirit that governed the writing of this work make the Bible a delightful vaudeville comedy, alternating between imaginary dialogues and bar-room exegesis: "As the beloved people could not properly flee empty-handed from Egypt, God ordered them to steal from the Egyptians (Exodus), and in the Decalogue, he forbade them to steal. Good God! how do you expect me to serve you if you don't know how you want to be served?
Attached is a L.A.S. from the author to Monsieur le Baron de la Doucette, Secretary General of the Société Philotechnique: "Monsieur et cher confrère, / Je suis trop flatté des reproches que vous m'adressez au nom de la Société pour ne pas y être extrêmement sensible. I hope that my colleagues will not attribute my long absence from their meetings to indifference. The weight of the years and the bad season keep me by my fire. I only leave it during the day, and when my business requires it. / Spring is approaching and will bring a little sap to my numb limbs. I will then be able to make up for the hardships I have been obliged to endure / Yours sincerely / Pigault-Lebrun".
