Description
GAVARNI (Paul) (1804-1866). Household impressions. Very rare suite illustrated with 36 watercoloured and gummed lithographs in colour, preserved in its original publisher's boards. Paris, Pennier & Aubert et Cie, s.d. (circa 1840). Full navy blue cloth, title stamped in gold in the centre of the front cover. 1f. - 36pl. - 8ff. publisher's catalogue - 1f. Freckles, very slight wear to headpieces, angular lack at foot of pl.1, very small tear at foot of pl.4 not affecting the litho, very small accident at head of pl.10 not affecting the litho, 9 cm tear at head of pl.18 affecting the litho, marginal wetness on the same pl, 10cm tear missing at foot of plate 20 affecting the litho, 3cm tear at foot of plate 22 affecting the legend, marginal wetness on same plate, 3cm tear at foot of plates 25 to 29, 32 & 34 not affecting the litho, plate 27 two other very small tears at foot not affecting the litho. The Gazette des Beaux-arts, reporting on this very fine publication by Gavarni, described it as "a representation of intimate scenes between well or ill-matched couples, of little teasing between husbands and wives, a tale of banal confidences or terrible revelations" (volume 12, 1875). We never see it in colour! We have bound in a folio-format catalogue from the Aubert publishing house, printed on china paper (piqué).
