Jacob Sturm (1771-1848), son of the German natural history illustrator Johann Georg, best known for his "De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum" (1788), drew early on in his father's footsteps, notably for Pallas and Johan von Schreber. Throughout his life, he illustrated the main naturalist works published in Germany, and was one of the greatest insect collectors of his time.
*** In 1791, he published one hundred copper-engraved plates illustrated by hand under the title Insekten-Cabinet nach der Natur gezeichnet und gestochen (Nurnberg, Stück, 1791), of which only one copy is known, held by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Like our copy, it consists of vignettes mounted in an album. This album could be the as yet unknown continuation of this series, which was expanded by a further 200 plates in 1793! ***
The collection appears to be the work of an anonymous 20th-century amateur, as evidenced by the style of the handwritten illustrations at the head of the volume and the type of paper used.
