UZANNE (Octave). VIDAL (Pierre). Women in Paris - Our Contemporaries. Notes successives sur les Parisiennes de ce temps dans leurs divers milieux, états et conditions. Illustrations by Pierre Vidal. Splendid work devoted to Parisian women, written, designed and produced by Octave Uzanne. Paris, Ancienne Maison Quantin, Mme C. Motteroz, 1894. Small in-4 (284 × 195 mm). Full havana morocco, decorated with gilt fillets on the boards and spine, mosaic eyelets in red, green and brown morocco at the corners, inner lace, gilt head. Signed Brentano's binding. 4 ff. n.ew, VI-328 pp. 6 ff. n.ew. Some spotting on boards and edges. First edition of this beautiful book for bibliophiles, superbly illustrated by Pierre Vidal with 20 coloured etchings and 320 illustrations, 130 of which are enhanced by hand. The beautiful Art Nouveau cover, printed in colour and signed by the painter Léon Rudnicki, is preserved (without the spine). A deluxe copy of a limited "small number" edition on rare pearlescent Japanese paper, decorated with plant prints. This work by Octave Uzanne, a celibate dandy and keen observer, paints a complete and subjective portrait of "women" in four main sections: - Physiology of the contemporary woman (the Parisienne, the modern nude, grooming); - Women in Paris in their various environments (domestic servants, working-class women, middle-class women, artists, sportswomen, etc.); - Women outside the moral law (prostitution in all its forms); - Psychology of the contemporary woman (daughter, wife and mother). Beyond its appearance as a book object for bibliophiles, this text, which is often profound and marked by the author's disenchantment, reveals a paradoxical spirit: beneath its sometimes misogynistic appearances, Uzanne tackles, with an almost progressive outlook, themes such as female prostitution - popular, bourgeois or highborn - as well as the hard work to which women are forced to subsist (linen maids, cooks, maids, etc.). A fine copy.
