Sumptuous lined and mosaic binding by Henri Blanchetière, enclosing one of 20 copies on Japon (N°5), including an additional suite of etchings and woodcuts on Japon and a triple state of the etchings with remarks (first state on Vélin d'Arches, suite in black on Japon and suite in colour on Japon). Paris, Meynial, 1911. In-4 (210x350 mm), midnight blue morocco, boards decorated with a semiset of gilt stars in a broad stylised listel of pinkish-brown morocco surrounded by a gilt fillet and set with a garland of flowers and leaves stamped and mosaicked in ochre and brown morocco, with in the centre of the first board a large lyre mosaicked in ochre and grey morocco, spine with 4 false-nerfs decorated in the same way, inner border in the same morocco signed "H. Blanchetière", anthracite morocco linings framed with a gilt fillet and two green morocco listels interspersed with mosaic flowers and leaves in ochre and green morocco, some enhanced with gold, anthracite moiré silk endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges, edged slipcase (H. Blanchetière). 73 pages, 1 frontispiece, 4 full-page compositions and 4 bands engraved in etching by Charles Chessa after Luc-Olivier Merson, 1 title, 4 false titles, a medallion, a printer's proof and 1 frame on each page engraved in wood by Ernest Florian after Adolphe Giraldon. Slight rubbing on the nerves, tiny white marks on the first cover and on the edges, minimal wear to the slipcase. Splendid edition, designed by Henry Couderc de Saint-Chamant, of these four famous elegiac poems composed by Alfred de Musset after his break-up with George Sand. The poems are accompanied by ethereal illustrations, including 5 full-page compositions and 4 headbands by Luc-Olivier Merson, etched by Charles Chessa and printed in full colour by Alfred Porcabeuf, as well as a title, 4 false titles, a medallion, a printer's proof and a frame on each page by Adolphe Giraldon, wood-engraved by Ernest Florian and printed in full colour by Charles Eyménié. A fine preface by Edmond Haraucourt introduces the collection. Limited edition of 161 copies, this being one of 20 copies on Japon paper (N°5), including a suite of etchings and woodcuts in their final state on Japon and three additional states of the etchings with remarks (a first state suite on Vélin d'Arches, a black suite on Japon and a colour suite on Japon). Charming binding with Henri Blanchetière's poetic and dreamy mosaic.
