MENDÈS (Catulle) and SCWHABE (Carloz). L'Évangile de l'Enfance de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ selon Saint-Pierre. Translated into French by Catulle Mendès from the manuscript of the Abbey of Saint Wolfgang. Compositions and frames by Carloz Schwabe. A very fine first copy with a triple suite of engravings, enriched by an original signed watercolour by Carlos Schwabe, in an elegant Art Nouveau mosaic binding by Charles Meunier. S.l. Large in-4 (245x330 mm), red ochre half morocco with corners edged with gilt fillet, smooth spine decorated with a floral composition stamped and mosaicked in brown and havana morocco, at the head a Christian cross mosaicked in brown morocco within a cluster of gilt rays, linings and endpapers of blue paper, gilt head on witnesses, covers preserved (the first illustrated), edged slipcase (Charles Meunier). Minor rubbing and light browning to leather, corners dulled, foxing to gutter edge. Fine edition of this apocryphal gospel, recounting the childhood of Jesus, his life and miracles, set in French by Catulle Mendès and decorated by Carlos Schwabe with 17 full-page colour lithographs and numerous decorative floral borders in the Art Nouveau style. Deluxe edition limited to 200 copies, this being one of the first 50 (No. 17), with a triple suite of engravings including two separate suites (one in colour and one in black on China paper). A precious copy enriched with an original watercolour in colour (280x220 mm) signed by Carlos Schwabe, depicting a luxuriant floral decoration in a frame, probably used as a proof for the illustration of the book.
