Description
MONNIER (Henry). [Lithographs after the Chansons de Béranger]. Remarkable facsimile collection of 24 colour prints by Henry Monnier collected here in a luxurious album. [Paris, Bernard et Delarue, rue N.-D. des Victoires, 16. ca. 1828]. Album in-4 oblong (200 x 315 mm). Half morocco with corners, marbled paper boards, gilt filleting, spine ribbed decorated with fillets and gilt title "Henry Monnier". (Modern binding). Some rare foxing on the modern plates; central fold visible on some engravings. Collection of 24 cut-out colour prints, gummed or not, and finely enhanced with brush watercolours. Mounted on strong vellum with ink framing, the versos openwork. Two with margins preserved have the printed mention "Béranger", the name of the lithographer (Bernard), and the indication of the publishers (Bernard and Delarue). Most likely from the rare album entitled "Lithographies d'après les chansons de Béranger" published by Bernard and Delarue in 1828. Not to be confused with the 33 + 7 engravings in-8 for the Baudoin frères edition of 1828, whose line is coarser. Reference: Carteret, III, p. 73: "very rare complete album, exists in black and in colour". Henry Monnier (1799-1877), a major caricaturist and illustrator of the first half of the 19th century, drew his inspiration here from the chansonnier Béranger, a champion of republican values and social satire who was much admired by Balzac. This fine collection bears witness to the dialogue between song, satire and illustration in the Romantic period, preserved in an elegant bibliophile binding.
