Description
[PYRENEES] - RAMOND DE CARBONNIERES (Louis François Élisabeth). Travels to Mont-Perdu and the adjacent part of the Hautes-Pyrénées. Ramond de Carbonnières' pioneering explorations in the Hautes-Pyrénées, an important Pyrenean book. Paris, Belin, 1801. Volume in-8 (205 x 135 mm), half dark green morocco, smooth spine decorated with red morocco and decorative fillets, boards covered with modern green paper. Folding frontispiece, IV title and contents pages, 392 pages, 5 folding plates. Missing a fragment of the head cap. Boards restored. First edition, illustrated with six folding plates, including a frontispiece. They are drawn by Ramond and engraved on strong vellum by Baltard, with the exception of a plate of fossils drawn by Maréchal and engraved by Jourdan. Louis Ramond de Carbonnières (1755-1827), born in Strasbourg and known today as one of the pioneers of Pyrenean exploration, discovered the mountain when he followed Cardinal de Rohan into exile in Barèges following the affair over the "Queen's necklace". During the French Revolution, he returned in 1793 and spent almost ten years exploring the Mont-Perdu region. In Cent ans aux Pyrénées, Beraldi described this work - a geological memoir of the limestone massif of Mont-Perdu and a description of his climbs - as "a natural history cabinet, but adorned with grandiose frescoes; it is the classic book of the literature of the high regions...". Provenance: engraved heraldic bookplate, bearing the motto: A moy, nec unquam te contamina, Lamais. A fresh copy, complete with plates.
