Description
PRÉVOST (L'Abbé Antoine François). Histoire du chevalier des Grieux, et de Manon Lescaut. A very fine copy, perfectly established in full morocco, of the most sought-after edition of Abbé Prévost's famous novel, illustrated in the first printing with 8 charming figures and a vignette after Pasquier and Gravelot. Amsterdam, Aux dépens de la Compagnie, 1753. 2 vols. in-12, blond morocco, spine ribbed with gilt stippling, central finial framed by a frieze and a double gilt fillet to the entrenerfs, title in gilt lettering, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, guilloché headpieces, double gilt fillet on the edges, lining in the same morocco decorated with a fillet border and a frieze with gilt corner irons, marbled paper endpapers, gilt edges over marbling, in a marbled decorated slipcase. Later binding. 11 pp. and 302 pp. + 1 f. errata; 252 pp. with 8 hors-texte figures by J.-J. Pasquier and Gravelot (4 figures in vol. 1, 4 in vol. 2), 1 etching vignette by Pasquier repeated at the head of each part, 2 title finials, 1 engraved headband in vol. 1, an ornamented lettering and a bas-de-lampe in each part. Slight rubbing on some nerves, slight detachment of leather in four places on the spines, very rare foxing in the margins, slight fading of some engravings. This is the most sought-after edition for bibliophiles as it is the definitive edition, given by the author in 1753, on which all subsequent editions are based. It is also the first illustrated edition, decorated with 8 delicate figures, including 6 drawn and engraved by J.J. Pasquier and 2 engraved by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783) after Gravelot (1699-1773), as well as a vignette engraved by J.J. Pasquier at the head of each part. A complete copy in 2 volumes, including the following pagination error in volume 1: 202/203 erroneously numbered 102/103. [Cohen, 468-470]. A delightful copy, in rich morocco with lining.
