Exceptional first copy on Japon, printed for the publisher, including 3 states of the illustrations, and enriched with an original watercolour signed by Jacques Wagrez and 7 autograph letters signed (by Banville, Wagrez, Rochegrosse, Clarétie and Boisson), in a sumptuous binding signed by Cuzin. Large in-8 (170x260 mm), black morocco, ribbed spine with gilt stippling, double gilt border and gilt fleurons to the entrenerfs, gilt lettering, date at foot, richly decorated with gilt filleting to the boards, double gilt filleting to the edges, red morocco lining decorated with gilt and mosaic flowers in green and turquoise morocco, the first signed by the bookbinder, red silk endpapers, double combed paper endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, covers and spine preserved, signed slipcase (A. Cuzin). Cuzin). 98 pages, 1 portrait-frontispiece and 14 compositions by J. Wagrez etched in the text by L. Boisson. Slight rubbing to the edges of the slipcase, small brown spot on the LAS de Banville, not affecting the text. Charming edition of the most famous prose work by Théodore de Banville (1823-1891), decorated with his portrait and 14 compositions by painter Jacques Clément Wagrez, etched by Léon Boisson. Precious first copy on Japon, printed for the publisher Léopold Carteret, including 3 states of illustrations, and enriched on the false-title with a very fine original watercolour signed Jacques Wagrez, with an autograph dispatch to the publisher, dated October 1899. Unique copy to which has been added: - 1 LAS signed by Banville (1pp. in-8); - 1 LAS signed by Wagrez (3 pp. in-8); -1 LAS signed by Jules Claretie (1pp. in-8); -1 LAS signed by Georges Rochegrosse; -1 LAS signed by the engraver Boisson (1pp. in-8); 1 other LAS signed by Wagrez (4 pp. in-8); -1 other LAS signed by Jules Claretie (1pp. in-8). The first three have been glued to the white endpapers, the last four mounted on in-fine tabs. Nice ex-libris vignette of Léopold Carteret engraved in colours by Léon Boisson and ex-libris with the monogram G.B. on the flyleaf. Remarkable binding with mosaic lining, perfectly established by Cuzin.
