Description
AUSONE. Bordeaux, Simon Millanges, 1575 and 1580 (commentary). In-4, brown calf à la Du Seuil, ribbed spine decorated with gilt irons, boards decorated with two gilt triple fillets with fleurons at the corners of the second, central medallion "Jesus Maria" on each board surrounded by a gilt crown of thorns, chants decorated with gilt roulette, all edges gilt. Bound in contemporary style. 21 ff, 132 ff, 241 ff, woodcuts, 2 full-page plates and 2 folding plates out of text. Some spotting to boards. Some foxing, marginal wetness to last nine leaves, some leaves shaded. The margins of the fold-out plates are missing without affecting the design. Work in Latin. A very fine Bordeaux printing, the first edition of these works by Ausonius with commentary by Elie Vinet, complete with the two engraved plates showing the amphitheatre of Bordeaux and the current Piliers de Tutelle. Handwritten bookplate erased on the title page, a second one on the colophon, a handwritten note with a dry stamp erased on the first endpaper. A rich commentary by the humanist Elie Vinet (1509-1587) on these works by the Bordeaux poet Ausone, "of perfect typographical impression and composition" (Labadie p. 68). The printing began in 1575 (date on verso of title page), while the commentaries were printed in 1580 (date on colophon). This delay, commonly attributed to a lack of paper, was probably due to the author reworking the commentary after Joseph Scaliger misappropriated his manuscript and published it under his own name in 1574. A very fine copy of this seminal work by Vinet. [Barbe 45 | Labadie p. 68 | Brunet I, 573].
