JOUAS (Charles). HUYSMANS (Joris-Karl). The Cathedral. A magnificent copy in full mosaic binding by Kieffer of this major work of modern illustration. Paris, Blaizot, 1909. In-4 (290x210mm), full midnight blue grosgrain morocco, 4 ribbed spine, decorated with a geometrical gilt frame, richly worked boards starting from a rose window at the head evoking a stained glass window of a cathedral, mosaic of grey, beige, green and amaranth morocco, mosaic of grey, beige, green and amaranth leather, with rays of gilt fillet running from the mosaic, boards each lined with a large etching printed on silk and inlaid, counter-guards in a beautiful dark multicoloured fabric, covers preserved, slipcase (René Kieffer). One of 180 numbered copies on Vellum, out of a total edition of 250. The endpapers are inlaid with a silk print of two etchings, depicting a Virgin and Child in the manner of an architectural detail. The magnificent etchings in and outside the text, printed in bistre ink, are by Charles Jouas (1866-1942). A self-taught artist, he was discovered and revealed by the great bibliophile Henri Beraldi, who commissioned him to illustrate a number of luxury works. His works are kept at the Musée Carnavalet.
