The two albums of the Chansons du Chat Noir are perfectly set in two deluxe bindings in red half-maroquin with corners, Paris, Au Ménestrel, Henri Heugel, (1890-1891). 2 works in 2 volumes in-4 (302 x 206 mm), raspberry red half-maroquin, gilt fillet on covers, smooth spine decorated with elegant gold and cold stamped decoration, title with author in centre gilt lettering, gilt heads. 114 pp, (1 f.), illustrated cover; 125 pp, (1 f.), illustrated cover. Paper a little yellowed at the edges of the pages. First collective edition, published posthumously, of the songs composed by Mac-Nab for the Chat Noir cabaret. Maurice Mac-Nab (1856-1889) was a postal clerk by day and a chansonnier by night. He made his reputation at the famous cabaret created by Rodolphe Salis, where he performed his greatest hits such as "Le Grand métingue du métropolitain". The Chansons and Nouvelles chansons were published by Donald MacNab, the author's brother. The first volume contains 12 songs with music by Camille Baron. It is illustrated with 3 compositions by Ferdinand Bac (two in colour on the cover and one in black on the title), a portrait of the author by Merwart and 48 vignettes in black in the text by Henri Gerbault. The second volume also includes 12 songs, with music by Roland Kohr. All the illustrations are by Henri Gerbault, with the exception of a portrait of MacNab by Fernand Fau. It also contains an extensive preface by Donald MacNab. Provenance: from the library of Jean de La Jaline, pseudonym of Charles Joubert, vice-admiral of the French navy (1875-1947), with a very fine etched bookplate. A very fine copy.
