One of the first systematic attempts to retrace the history of explorations of northern regions, complete with the map of the North Pole drawn by the author and engraved by Tardieu. Paris, Cuchet, 1788. 2 volumes in-8 ( 205 x 135 mm). Demi-basane with corners, spine ribbed and decorated with two parts and boxes with gilt small irons. Contemporary binding. XV-399 pp. XII 410 pp. 3 folding maps. Leather a little faded, rubbed, missing a fragment of the head cap of volume 2, jaws rubbed, corners damaged. Some light foxing. Map of Asia a little faded. French first edition, translated by Broussonet of this esteemed work. Illustrated with 3 folding maps, including a map of Europe, a large map of Asia and a map of the North Pole. Johann Reinhold Forster (1729-1798) was a German-British linguist and ethnographer, one of the great scientific figures of eighteenth-century voyages of exploration. He was also a professor of natural history and mineralogy and a member of Captain Cook's second voyage. His aim here is to compile and summarise all the voyages to the Arctic from Antiquity to the Russian and British expeditions of the 18th century. Provenance: "Sophie Potocka" with handwritten ex-libirs on the titles. Countess Sophie Potocka (1760-1822) was famous in her day for her beauty and adventurous life.
