Description
BURLAMAQUI (Jean-Jacques). Principles of Political Law.
A copy of a very rare quarto edition, with a relay title, in a fine binding with the arms of Boyer de Crémille (1700-1768).
Amsterdam, Zacharie Chastelain [i.e. Geneve, chez Barillot et fils, ca 1748] 1751.
One volume In-4 (246 × 205 mm). Contemporary full glazed fawn calf, triple cold fillet framing the boards, gilt coat of arms in the centre, spine ribbed and decorated with flowered caissons, inner gilt border, red speckled edges (contemporary binding).
380 pp.
Minor wear to the binding.
Extremely rare first edition of this fundamental work by the Genevan philosopher Jean-Jacques Burlamaqui (1694-1748). Along with the Principles of Natural Law (Geneva, 1747, 1 vol.), which it extends, it is one of the founding texts of Enlightenment political thought.
This extremely rare in-4 edition is the sequel and volume II of the original edition of Principes du droit naturel printed in Geneva by Barillot et fils in 1747.
Copies of this volume II are rare: one has been found with volume I, described by WorldCat, and several others, with a relay page, like ours, addressed to Amsterdam, Zacharie Chastelain, 1751. The text, divided into four parts, corresponds in its entirety to the two in-12 volumes published the same year by Z. Chastelain in Amsterdam, considered to be the original edition proper.
"Burlamaqui (1694-1748) had published in Geneva in 1747 the Principes du droit naturel, which was, according to him, only the "beginning" of a more extensive work. The book was a great success and, after the author's death, the publisher selected the pages relating to political law from Burlamaqui's workbooks and published them under the title Principles of Political Law. The work quickly became a classic of legal philosophy". ( cf Goffinon)
Provenance: Louis Hyacinthe Boyer de Crémille, with his arms on the boards.
A superb copy of this important treatise on political philosophy, preserved in its first tan calf binding with the arms of Boyer de Crémille.
