[SPAIN] - SWINBURNE (Henry). Travels through Spain, in the years 1775 and 1776. In which several Monuments of Roman and Moorish Architecture are illustrated by accurate drawings taken on the spot. First edition of this travel account embellished with beautiful engraved plates and maps, our copy completed by the supplement of the 1787 edition bound afterwards (London, Elmsly, 1787. T., 75 pp., 1 engraved map) for a journey from Bayonne to Marseille. London, Elmsly, 1779. In-4, tan calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fleurons and cold fillets, black title page, boards decorated with cold crosses and a double gilt fillet, all edges marbled. Work in English. VII (title, preface), 7 ff.n.ch. (table, index), 4 ff. (chronology, itinerary), 427 pp. 18 engraved plates of which 5 folding, one folding map. Spine damaged, jaws partially split, corners rubbed, some minor spotting. Occasional foxing, some wetness in the margins of pages 193 to 196. Discharges of plates on the facing leaves. An English traveller, Henry Swinburne (1743-1803) was living with his family in Bayonne when he set off for Spain in the autumn of 1775 in the company of Sir Thomas Gascoigne. The two men took a long route from the east coast to Andalusia, via Madrid. The result is a vast picture of eighteenth-century Spain illustrated with numerous plates based on drawings by the author, engraved by himself or by Giomignani, showing the Alhambra, archaeological monuments, Moorish architectural features and landscapes encountered during the journey.
