Volume in-8 (195 x 138 mm), full jansenist red chagrin, spine ribbed, author, title and date in gilt lettering, gilt head. 495 pages. Spine a little shaded, light wear rubbing to the spine ends, small crack at the head of the first spine end, traces of handling on a few rare leaves, a few spots not serious. First edition, one of 250 numbered copies on hollande, the only large paper after some rare chine. Naturalist novel, tenth volume of the Rougon-Macquart series. Zola plunges us into the bourgeois turpitudes of the Second Empire, where hypocrisy, adultery and ambition depict a society corrupted by money and appearances. A pleasant hardback copy, untrimmed with the covers preserved.
