Description
GUYMIER, (Cosmas). Pragmatica Sanctio studiosis utilissima Concordatis. Cosmae Guymier (...) Commentarius ad Pragmaticam sanctionem in Synodo Basilien[si] sub Papa Eugenio iiii & Carlo vij. [followed by] Concordata inter sanctis.
An important work by Cosme Guymier (14..-1503), a renowned Parisian jurisconsult, the first in a movement that combined absolute monarchy and Parliament against heretics, which later rendered the Reformation in France legally irrelevant.
Lugduni: Sumptibus Ant. Vincentii : apud Math. Bonhome. No date given (1538).
One volume in-8 (170x114mm). Tan basane, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fleurons (Binding early 18th c.).
In Latin.
Two parts in one volume 262 ff.n.ch. ; 54 ff.n.ch. (complete text and table); 21ff+4ff.nch (complete text, missing 1 or more leaves from the table, including the colophon).
Waxing to spine and boards, beginning of split at head of first jaw, restoration to foot cap. Good interior despite a small angular lack of the title, wetness on the first 9 leaves and in the margin of the last 4 leaves, small gallery in the margin of leaves xi to lviii, several passages underlined.
Rare 16th century edition from Lyon, well printed in 1538, with title in red and black within a woodcut architectural frame, text in Gothic script decorated with woodcut historiated lettrines.
Cosme Guymier's fundamental commentary on the Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges (1438), a decree promulgated on 7 July 1438 by Charles VII governing relations between the Gallican (i.e. French) Church and the Pope. This text was an important step in the emancipation of the monarchy from the Holy See.
In his commentary, first published in Paris in 1486, Guymier asserted Gallican freedoms against Roman centralisation and proposed one of the first legal and theological elaborations in favour of a state Gallicanism.
As in the BNF copy, the text of the Concordat of Bologna (1516) between Francis I and Pope Leo X, printed at the same address in Lyon for Antoine Vincent, has been bound in.
