Extremely rare edition from Lyon, unknown to Barbier, containing six letters and five replies.
Lyon, Chez Claude Muguet, rue Mercière, au bon Pasteur, 1674.
In-12 (145 x 85 mm), granulated havana calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt irons.
4pp.n.ch., 116 pages.
Leather faded, headbands faded, gilding faded, corners bumped. Old handwritten note (in black pen) in the margin of pages 44 and 45.
Very rare new anonymous edition including a "to the reader", five letters and five replies, the collection ends with a sixth letter which begins "At last, Marianne, you no longer love me, & you triumph...". "A neat, well-printed edition with a wood-engraved fleuron on the title. Text embellished with wood-engraved typographical ornaments.
The first edition was published in 1669 by Claude Barbin and contained five letters from the "Portuguese nun".
One of the greatest literary texts of the 17th century: "...you will never find so much love, and all the rest is nothing" (first letter). "You must love like the Portuguese nun" (Stendhal).
A fresh, clean copy, preserved in its original binding.
