Description
MADONNA AND CHILD Southern France, probably Rouergue or Auvergne Late 17th / early 18th century Carved and polychromed wood. A large Madonna and Child in the round, retaining much of its original polychromy. The frontal composition, the faces with large almond-shaped eyes, the simplified folds of the cloak and the deliberately archaic proportions bear witness to the enduring influence of Romanesque models in the popular religious sculpture of the Massif Central. The Child, depicted nude, holds the globe, a symbol of his sovereignty over the world. H.: 96 cm Signs of wear, restoration, traces of wood-boring insects, cracks and small areas of loss.
