JAPAN – MEIJI period (1868–1912). A brown lacquered cabinet with two hinged doors and a drawer at the front, decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays (aogai) depicting sparrows amongst peonies; the copper fittings are engraved with karakusa motifs, whilst the sides and back are decorated with sparrows and bamboo; the interior containing six drawers decorated with hira maki-e in red and gold lacquer depicting medallions of carnations, camellias, peonies, chrysanthemums and plum blossoms. (Signs of wear)
