Description
Paul CHOCARNE-MOREAU (1855–1930). Altar boys and sacramental wine. Oil on canvas, signed lower right. 122 x 96 cm (Minor losses, wear and tear, some subtle retouching) Imposing wooden frame with gilded carved stucco decoration featuring shells. (Some minor imperfections) Bearing the inscription ‘HC’ (‘hors concours’) on the frame. Chocarne-Moreau was a portraitist and genre painter. He often depicted the theme of childhood with humour and mischief. He made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1882 and went on to exhibit regularly. He was awarded a bronze medal at the 1889 World’s Fair.
