Description
Eliane BIRABENT (1897–1980). The Unicorns. Oil on canvas, oval format, signed lower right. Rectangular wooden frame with bronze-coloured stucco decoration featuring shells and foliage. Based on the painting by Gustave Moreau (1826–1898), *Les Licornes* (1885). Canvas dimensions: 94 x 75 cm Frame dimensions: 125 x 102.5 cm (Small chip in the stucco) Provenance: the artist’s descendants Eliane Birabent (1897–1980), née Legrois, was born in Algeria and travelled and lived with her husband around the world, notably in Antwerp; she was a pupil of Octave Guillonnet at the JULIAN studio on Rue de Berry in Paris. Her early work was strongly influenced by Gustave Moreau. As an Orientalist painter, she developed her style towards a colourful lyricism inspired by the light of North Africa and Spain. Mountain landscapes, particularly those of the Savoie region, also feature prominently in her work.
