Description
Vally WIESELTHIER (1895–1935). Woman with a Fan. Glazed terracotta sculpture, signed on the base. Art Deco period. Height: 45 cm Valerie ‘Vally’ Wieselthier, an Austro-American Expressionist artist. An exceptional ceramist, designer and sculptor, and a member of the Wiener Werkstätte. She became famous for her expressive and humorous figurines as early as the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris; these are regarded as characteristic examples of Art Deco style. From 1928 onwards, Wieselthier made numerous visits to the United States. In October 1928, she exhibited at the International Exhibition of Ceramic Arts in New York. Her works feature in the collections of numerous museums, notably the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna (Austria).
