Description
A rare pair of silver spoons from the Louis XIV period, in a pear-shaped design bearing a coat of arms, with the spoon head shaped like a rat’s tail. Hallmarks of the Fermiers Généraux from the very early 18th century. Jurisdiction and city of PARIS for the period 1704–1708. Master silversmith: Noël DUQUESNOY, admitted to the guild in 1694. Spatulas engraved with a coat of arms beneath a crown. Length: 19.5 cm. Weight: 144g. The numerous royal coinage issues ordered by King Louis XIV, notably those of 1689 and 1709, intended to address the shortfall in the Royal Treasury and to finance various wars, played a major part in the disappearance of a great many pieces of silverwork dating from before 1710. The Revolutionary coinage of the late 18th century and the speculative coinage of subsequent centuries only served to accentuate this trend towards scarcity and depletion. Objects from the early 18th century are therefore of particular interest from a cultural, artistic and historical perspective.
