Description
Brittany. Family-named wedding chest in moulded oak, decorated with carved acanthus leaves, bunches of grapes and fleurs-de-lis. The upper section opens via two doors, each adorned with a religious sculpture in the round: Saint Joan with a child on the left-hand door and the Virgin and Child on the right-hand door. Four panels decorated with flowers and vine tendrils, and the crossbars are inscribed with ‘JANNE GUILLOU 1681’ and ‘IHS MARIA’. Dated 1681. Key. 17th century. Some missing pieces, notably at the upper joints and on the Virgin’s crown; signs of wear.
